Women's Basketball - Martinelli Breaks Rebounding Record in Loss
Melissa Martinelli led all scorers with 28 points and broke the school-record with 869 career rebounds.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/13/10)--Babson shot 61.1 percent in the second half and blew open a close game at the half by outscoring Coast Guard 49-17 in the half to beat the Bears 80-45 and remain unbeaten in conference play with the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win.
Senior Melissa Martinelli had another huge game as she finished with a game-high 28 points on 12 of 18 shooting from the floor and along with freshman Karli Collins grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. She also became the Bears all-time leading rebounder eclipsing the mark of Diana Sharp (‘97), who had 866 career rebounds. Martinelli now has 869 rebounds in her career and is the Bears all-time leading scorer with 1,794 points.
The Beavers (20-3, 16-0) led 33-30 with 19:20 left in the game before outscoring Coast Guard 25-6 over the next ten minutes for a 58-36 lead with 9:21 left in the game.
Babson used a 20-4 run over the final eight minutes as the Bears shot just 26.7 percent in the second half (8 for 30).
Sophomore Nicole Wurdeman led the Beavers with 18 points while freshman Allanah Wynn and classmate Sarah Collins each added 12 points in the win. Collins also had a game-high 10 rebounds in the win while Wynn had a game-high five assists.
Coast Guard, which dropped its 11th straight conference game, played outstanding in the first half shooting 45.8 percent (11-24) in the opening 20 minutes as Martinelli had a huge first half leading the way with 18 points.
The Bears led 21-19 following a basket by sophomore Rebecca Seifer with 5:21 left in the opening half before Babson used a 12-2 run capped on a pair of free throws by sophomore Kelly McKenna for its largest lead of the half, 31-23 with 1:39 left. Babson turned the ball over 14 times in the first half and finished the game with 19 turnovers while Coast Guard turned the ball over 17 times in the first half and 26 in the game.
Babson shot 54.8 percent in the game (34-62) and hit five of 10 from 3-point range while Coast Guard shot 35.2 percent (19-54) and hit just four of 21 from behind the arc.
