Melissa Martinelli won NEWMAC Player of the Week honors for the third time this season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/8/10)--Coast Guard senior Melissa Martinelli has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. She wins the honor for the third time this season.

Melissa continued to state her case for NEWMAC Player of the Year honors as she had a huge week and the Bears snapped an eight-game losing streak with a win over rival Connecticut College.

Martinelli averaged 27.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in a 1-2 week. In the win over Connecticut College, she had a season-high 32 points, 29 in the second half to go with her game-high 13 rebounds. She shot 57.4 percent from the floor (27-47) for the week and 78.4 percent from the line (29-37). She added 27 points in a loss to MIT and closed out the week with 24 points in a loss to Smith.

She leads the NEWMAC in scoring with 19.7 points per game and also leads the Bears with 8.5 rebounds, 34 assists and a 47.2 field goal percentage.

Martinelli, a first team All-conference selection for the past two seasons, became the Bears all-time leading scorer earlier this season and now has 1,742 points and she is just 12 rebounds shy of the Academy’s all-time rebounding mark of 866 rebounds held by Diana Sharp (‘97).

Coast Guard is 5-14 overall and 3-11 in conference play with five regular season games left.
