KINGS POINT, N.Y.--(1/26/10)--Junior Rebecca Grimes had 25 points and the Mariners used an 11-2 run early in the second half as Merchant Marine beat Coast Guard 67-63 in a non-conference game between the rivals.

Senior Melissa Martinelli had a huge game in the losing effort as she finished with a season-high 31 points, including 13 for 13 from the foul line, and a season-high 15 rebounds. Martinelli now has 1,625 points in her career and is now just 15 points shy of her former teammate Natalie Moyer (’08), who is the Bears all-time leading scorer with 1,640 points. She also now has 807 career rebounds.

She eclipsed a pair of milestones in the first half as she surpassed the 1,600 point mark and the 800 rebound plateau becoming just the second player in program history to reach either of those marks.

Martinelli had a huge first half as she finished the opening stanza with 19 points and 11 rebounds. She gave Coast Guard its only lead of the game, 32-31 on a pair of free throws with 1:30 left.

She had 10 of the Bears first 12 points as the Bears, cut an early five point deficit to 13-12 with 10:45 left on pair of free throws by Martinelli, who was nine for nine from the foul line in the first half.

Merchant Marine led 36-32 at the break behind 13 points from Grimes.

The Mariners (7-9) used an 11-2 spurt in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 49-37 lead and Merchant Marine had its largest lead of the game at 53-39 with 14:19 left in the game.

Merchant Marine led 63-51 following a 3-pointer by Grimes with 8:57 left in the game.

Coast Guard (4-10), which leads the all-time series with Merchant Marine 7-3, did not go quietly as the Bears outscored the Mariners 10-2 and cut the lead to just four at 65-61 following a pair of free throws by freshman Vanessa Sillman with 1:23 left.

Senior Brooke Picillo made a pair of key free throws with 11 seconds left to ice the game.

Merchant Marine shot 40.9 percent from the floor (27-66) while shooting a sizzling 85.7 percent from 3-point range, making six of seven. Coast Guard hit on 19 of 58 from the floor (32.8 percent) and made three of eight from behind the arc.

Both teams also shot very well from the foul line as the Bears made 22 of 25 (88 percent) and the Mariners connected on six of seven.

Sillman tied a season-high with nine points while junior Jessica Anderson also added nine points for the Bears, who have dropped six straight.
