WORCESTER, MASS.--(1/16/10)--WPI used a 16-0 first half run en route to a 68-55 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

WPI (12-3, 1-2), the six-time defending NEWMAC regular season champions, won their first conference game of the season after dropping their first two NEWMAC games of the year. Coast Guard drops to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Jeffrey Robinson led WPI with 16 points, 13 of those in the first half while Fernando Perez added 12 points and to go with six rebounds in the win.

The game was tied 10-10 with 13:48 left in first half when the Engineers took control with a 16-0 run taking a 26-10 lead with 7:44 left.

WPI did it with their defense, producing six turnovers and holding the Bears to 0-for-3 shooting from the floor during the spurt. The Engineers parlayed 12 Coast Guard first half turnovers into 15 points and led 38-23 at the break.

The Engineers led by as many as 23 at 57-34 with 7:27 left, but the Bears made a late run cutting the lead to ten at 64-54 with 1:45 left.

Junior Brett Huntley led Coast Guard and tied a season-high with 16 points off the bench on six of eight shooting, including three of five from 3-point range, while junior Jevon James had seven points, 10 rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots.

WPI, which beat Coast Guard for the seventh straight time in the regular season, shot 35.8 percent from the field (24-67) while making three of 16 from 3-point range.

The Bears shot 37.3 percent from the floor (19-51) and connected on eight of 25 from behind 3-point range.
