Women's Basketball - Martinelli Named NEWMAC Player of the Week
Melissa Martinelli earned Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(12/14/09)--Coast Guard senior Melissa Martinelli has been selected the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. It is the second time in three weeks that she has won the award.
Melissa averaged 18.5 points, nine rebounds and 2.5 assists as the Bears went 1-1 with a loss at Wesleyan and a win versus Wellesley.
Martinelli moved into second place on Coast Guard’s all-time scoring and rebounding list in a loss vs. Wesleyan on Monday and now has 1,480 points and 745 rebounds.
Later in the week, She helped the Bears overcome an eight-point deficit with just over four minutes to play in a 47-44 conference win over Wellesley. Coast Guard scored the final 11 points in the win over Wellesley with Martinelli scoring nine of those points.
She shot 40.6 percent from the field (13-32) and 91.7 percent from the line (11-12) during the week
Martinelli, a first team All-conference selection for the past two seasons, and the Bears finished the first semester 3-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
