Melissa Martinelli took home the first NEWMAC Player of the Week honors for the 2009-2010 season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/30/09)--Coast Guard senior Melissa Martinelli has been named the first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the 2009-2010 season.
Martinelli averaged 25 points and nine rebounds as Coast Guard split the first two games of the season. She shot 54.5 percent from the floor (18-33) and 73.7 percent from the line (14-19). She scored 50 points in 52 minutes as the Bears split two games.
She opened the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds in just 17 minutes in a 54-34 win at Wheelock and followed that up with 26 points and seven rebounds in a 70-60 loss to Johnson & Wales.
Martinelli, a first team All-conference selection for the past two seasons, led the NEWMAC last year in scoring with 19.8 points per game, was third in field goal percentage (.531), fifth in rebounding (8.9) and sixth in free throw percentage (.780).
She is currently third all-time at the Academy with 1,417 points and fourth in school history with 711 rebounds.
Coast Guard begins conference play on Wednesday night at MIT.
