 Trip Fernandes had career-highs with 30 points and 10 rebounds in the win. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/17/09)--Junior Trip Fernandes had career highs with 30 points and 10 rebounds, the first double-double of his career, as Coast Guard rallied to beat Mitchell 95-92 in overtime in a non-conference game between the two New London schools. The win was the first career win for Coast Guard head coach Kevin Jaskiewicz.
Mitchell took a 85-81 lead with 2:26 left in regulation on a basket by junior Jenel Russell. The Mariners missed a pair of free throws before Fernandes cut the lead to 85-83 on a basket with 53 seconds left.
Mitchell turned the ball over with 19 seconds left and junior Jevon James tied the game 85-85 with 15 second left. The Mariners did not get a shot off in the final 15 seconds of regulation, sending the game to overtime.
Senior Eric Hudson scored the first four points of overtime on a pair of baskets giving Coast Guard an 89-85 lead with 3:42 left.
The Mariners got as close as 90-89 on a bucket by senior Eric Murray with 2:29 left before James scored the next four points on pair of free throws and then a basket with 1:12 left for a 94-89 lead.
Murray scored and was fouled with seven seconds left to make the score 95-92, but he missed the free throw, junior Drew Norris got the offensive rebound and gave the Mariners a chance to tie, but freshman Shadayne Philbert’s three-pointer in the final second was no good.
Mitchell (0-1) led by as many as nine twice in the first half, the latest being 29-20 with 9:24 left, but Coast Guard used a 17-4 spurt over the next three minutes for a 37-33 lead with 6:35 left. The Bears led 49-44 at halftime.
James finished with 17 points while tying a career-high with 15 rebounds, Hudson also had 17 points for the Bears. Senior Stefan Lewis was also in double figures with 13 points for Coast Guard (1-1).
Senior Mike DePaolo led Mitchell with 24 points while Murray finished with 22 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Norris added 18 points and 11 rebounds while Russell finished with 10 points for the Mariners.
Coast Guard shot 47.3 percent (35-74) in the game, but the Bears missed 17 free throws, finishing 19 for 36 from the foul line. Coast Guard was six for 18 from three-point range.
Mitchell shot 44.2 percent from the floor (34-77) and seven for 18 from behind the arc. |
