NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/10/09)--Junior quarterback Jordan Cannava’s 28-yard touchdown pass to classmate Carlos De La Rosa in double overtime capped a wild come-from-behind win as the Falcons knocked off Coast Guard 37-34 in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division game to spoil the Bears Homecoming Weekend.

Cannava finished 22 of 50 for 307 yards with three touchdown passes and a touchdown run while also throwing two interceptions.

Junior quarterback Jesse Karr became the first player in Coast Guard history to throw for over 300 yards twice in his career as he was 23 of 42 for 335 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Coast Guard (2-3, 2-1), which played its second double overtime game of the season, had its two-game winning streak snapped while Fitchburg State (4-2, 2-1) won its second straight. The Bears and Falcons are now part of a five-way tie for first place in the Bogan Division.

Fitchburg forced the overtime as Cannava threw a two-yard touchdown pass to senior Devon Jennings (11 catches, 138 yards) on 4th and goal before senior Steve Austin (17 carries, 71 yards) ran in the two-point conversion with just 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter capping a 13 play, 75-yard drive which tied the game 24-24.

The Falcons got the ball first in overtime and Cannava scored on a two-yard run and senior Evan Georgopoulos, who missed an extra point in the first quarter and had a pair of field goals blocked in the first half, added the PAT for a 31-24 lead.

The Bears answered as junior quarterback Jesse Karr threw a 5-yard touchdown to freshman Eric Gerken (six catches, 76 yards) and Shackleford’s point after tied the game at 31-31.

In the second overtime, Karr threw a 13-yard pass to freshman tight end Casey Paris giving Coast Guard a first and goal at the one-yard line, but back-to-back running plays lost yards and following an incomplete pass, Shackleford kicked a 25-yard field goal for a 34-31 lead.

The game winner came as Cassanava found De La Rosa over the middle on a third and 13.

Coast Guard turned the ball over five times in the first half, yet still led 14-13 as Karr threw an 18-yard touchdown to senior Cale Cooper and senior Steve Arguelles (29 carries, 86 yards) had a four-yard touchdown run.
