NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/1/09)--Coast Guard drove across the street to play a dual match with Connecticut College. The Bears, continuing to play without three starters, were unable to handle the strength and depth of the Connecticut squad that finished 2008-2009 ranked 15th in the Northeast, losing 6-3.
The bright moments for the Bears came at #1 doubles, and #1 and #3 singles. #1 doubles paired senior Chris Pappe with sophomore Nick Martin. Pappe and Martin continued to play outstanding doubles, dominating their opponent, and winning 8-2. Martin carried his strong play into #1 singles. He seemed to play effortlessly and “couldn’t miss” as he overwhelmed his opponent 6-1, 6-1.
Blake Maurer, still serving underhand, retained his undefeated status in singles play, winning playing #3, 6-2, 6-1.
Interestingly, Maurer’s opponent was clearly the strongest he has faced. But the better and the more forcing the opponent’s shot, the harder Maurer hit the ball back, usually for a winner.
The Bears fall to 2-2 on the season. Saturday, it’s up to Boston to play another powerhouse team, Brandeis, in the last dual match of the fall season.
