Women's Soccer - Shelton Assists Twice to Lead Bears
Shannah Shelton assisted on both goals as the Bears beat Mitchell 2-1.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/16/09)--Senior Katie Kurek and sophomore Erin Nolan each scored goals while sophomore Shannah Shelton assisted on both goals leading Coast Guard to a 2-1 win over Mitchell in a non-conference game between the two New London schools.
Kurek opened the scoring 18:23 into the match, her team leading seventh goal of the season, and just over two minutes later at 20:31 Nolan tallied her first goal of the season for a 2-0 lead. Kurek has now scored a goal in five of the Bears six games this season.
Sophomore Nikki Hoxie scored in the 23rd minute to cut the Coast Guard lead in half, but that would be all the scoring in the game as the Bears beat Mitchell for the second straight season in the second all-time meeting between the two schools.
Coast Guard (2-4) outshot Mitchell 19-10 and sophomore Mary Mills made six saves to pick up the win in goal for the Bears.
Sophomore Brittany O’Neil made two saves in the first half for Mitchell (0-5) while junior Morgan Lindsey had eight saves in the second half for the Mariners.
