Blake Maurer won at #5 singles and was part of the #3 doubles team that picked up a win. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/15/09)--Coast Guard hosted Division-III New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Wesleyan University (12th ranked in the Northeast for 2008-2009) in ideal New England weather. Wesleyan won the dual match 5-4, but the Bears fought them to the wire and made them earn the victory.
All three doubles were close and took nearly two hours to complete. Freshmen Blake Maurer and Shaun Wilson, playing #3, were the first to finish, winning 8-5. Sophomores Nick Martin and Wesley Figaro, playing at #2, had to play a great final three games to take their match 9-7. On court #1, sophomore Greg Mitchell and senior Chris Pappe were serving for the match 8-7, but Wesleyan broke to make it 8-8. Then Wesleyan played a great tiebreaker, winning 7-3 to take the #1 doubles 9-8 and the Bears led 2-1.
The first off the singles courts was Figaro who seemed to have nothing left in the tank after the doubles, losing 6-0, 6-0. Wilson fell next at #6 losing 6-2, 6-0.
The remaining match on the lower courts was Blake Maurer, playing #5 and serving underhanded with a sore shoulder. Maurer used strong ground strokes to overpower his opponent winning 6-2, 6-0 to tie the match 3-3.
Back on the upper courts Pappe, playing #3, was the next to fall 6-4, 6-1, but on court #2 Mitchell had won the first set and was leading in the second. On court #1 Martin also won the first set, but he was down 5-0 in the second. Martin fought back to 5-2, but Wesleyan got the next game to spit sets at #1. All play was then stopped due to darkness and both #1 and #2 headed indoors.
Mitchell finished the second set indoors, playing at his best, and winning several hard hitting ground stroke rallies. Greg won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to again tie the match, this time 4-4.
#1 singles had to play the entire third set indoors. Martin was broken serving at two games all, and although he served brilliantly the rest of the set, he could not get the break back and Wesleyan hung on to win the #1 singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, and to win the dual match 5-4.
Freshmen Maurer and Wilson are still unbeaten in doubles play and Maurer is unbeaten in singles.
The Bears will send two players to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships on 9/25-9/27. |
