 Jesse Karr threw for 338 yards and three scores in his collegiate debut. KINGS POINT, N.Y.--(9/12/09)--Coast Guard tied the game 24-24 with 1:29 left in regulation on an 18-yard touchdown pass from junior Jesse Karr to senior Steve Arguelles and a two-point conversion run by Karr, but missed a 42-yard field with five seconds left in regulation and lost its season opener to Merchant Marine 33-27 in double overtime in the annual battle for the Secretaries' Cup.
Karr, playing in his first collegiate game, was outstanding as he completed 29 of 52 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns.
He becomes just the fifth Coast Guard player in the past 18 years to throw for over 300 yards and the first since Niles Pierson threw for 346 yards vs. Curry in the 2006 NEFC Championship Game. Karr is the first Coast Guard player to throw for over 300 yards in a regular season game since Cory Anderson threw for 376 yards vs. St. Lawrence in 2004.
Arguelles carried 16 times for 100 yards while also leading the Bears with nine receptions for 48 yards. Senior Cale Cooper had five receptions for a career-high 125 yards and a touchdown.
This game marked the longest game in Coast Guard history, the Bears had played three single overtime games.
Junior running back Karl Heimbrock combined for 244 total yards of offense for the Mariners (2-0).
Quarterbacks senior Carlton Hobkirk (10-20) and junior Derrick Ventre (3-9) were good for 121 yards on the afternoon. Junior Karl Heimbrock came up big in regulation and overtime with 219 total rushing yards and four touchdowns led the ground attack. He also added three catches for 25 yards. Senior Calder Kaatz had 11 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble while sophomore Kevin Stapf added nine tackles and one sack and junior Marcus Broeder added six tackles and one fumble recovery to lead the defense.
Junior Mike Hart led the defense for Coast Guard with 10 tackles while junior Ben Barrett added nine and sophomore Nick Giancola had eight.
Coast Guard would put the first points on the game when sophomore Jacob Shackleford would kick a 44-yard field goal to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. Neither team would put up anymore points in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Mariners would knot the game at 3-3 with 14:53 to go on a 40-yard field goal by Richard Grennen. The Bears would answer seven minutes later when Karr threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to senior Sam England and a key part of the game was when Shackleford missed the extra point. Coast Guard would take a 16-3 lead after Karr threw his second touchdown pass of the game to Cooper. USMMA would recovery a Bears fumble to give them the ball on the Coast Guard eight yard line. One play later, Heimbrock would rush for his first touchdown of the day, 16-10.
Not much scoring happened in the third quarter but the only score was a big one. With 1:33 remaining in the quarter, Heimbrock capped a nine play 91-yard drive by the Mariners with an eight yard touchdown run to give the Mariners a 17-16 lead.
USMMA started the scoring in the fourth quarter to go up 24-16 with 10:01 left in the game. Heimbrock broke a 41-yard touchdown run for his third score of the game. Coast Guard would come back and with 1:29 on the clock, Karr would connect with Arguelles for an 18-yard touchdown pass. The Bears used a quarterback draw by Karr, USCGA would knot the game at 24-24.
In the first overtime, the Mariners went first on offense and Grennen was able to give the Mariners a 27-24 lead before Coast Guard got their shot. Shackleford came through in overtime as he hit a 24-yard field goal to send the game to its second overtime.
In the second overtime it was the Mariners defense that came up big. USMMA was able to force Shackleford to attempt a 39-yard field goal to give Coast Guard the lead but he missed wide left. All the Mariners needed to do in the second overtime was just get a field goal and the game would be over, but USMMA was not willing to settle for just a field goal. The Mariners ran seven running plays, all to Heimbrock and he was able to take seven rushes, 25-yard to score the winning touchdown for the Mariners, 33-27.
The Mariners came out on top on the scoreboard but the Bears finished with 426 total yards of offense to the Mariners 354.
