Men's Soccer - Bears Knock off RIC 1-0 in Season Opener
Walter Walker scored early in the second half and the Bears shutout RIC 1-0.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/1/09)--Sophomore Walter Walker scored the only goal of the game in the 47th minute leading Coast Guard to a season opening 1-0 win over Rhode Island College in the season opener for both teams.
Walker took a cross from classmate Anthony Bareno and scored just 1:28 into the second half as the Bears, who lost seven starters from the last year’s team that won the ECAC Division III New England Championship, opened the season with a one goal win for the seventh straight year.
The assist for Bareno was his first career point while Walker, who scored 31 goals in his senior year of high school, netted his second collegiate goal.
Rhode Island College, which won the Little East Conference championship and advanced the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament last season, outshot the Bears 12-7.
Senior Tim Olah, who recorded three straight shutouts to end the year in the ECAC Tournament last season, made six saves to record his 19th career shutout.
Freshman Andrew Hogan had two saves for the Anchormen.
