PITTSFIELD, MASS.-(4/25/09)--The Bears had an exciting day at Lake Oneota as the competition was strong against Williams, Marist, Bates and Ithaca.
In the men’s first varsity eight race, Coast Guard finished 5th, in a time of 6:24.3. Andrew Slater (Jr) joined with Andrew Haley (Sr), Nick Ianarone (Sr), Tomas Nojokitis (Sr), Dan Swaim (Jr), Phil Constantino (Jr), Kris Kesting (Jr), Tom Olsen (Jr), and Sam Merrit (Jr) in the win.
In the 2nd Varsity eight race, Coast Guard found themselves out front, leading from start to finish, beating the field by 5 seconds in a winning time of 6:27.5. Cox’n Courntey Elder (So), was joined by Joe Direnzo (Jr), Austin King (So), Bryan Bonomi (So), Tomas Mamaniskis (Sr), Roy Cromer (Sr), Evan Steckle (Jr), James Heuser (Jr), and John Olbrys (So),
In the men’s novice 8, Coast Guard was solidly in second place entering the sprint, but could not match the finishing speed of Williams who nipped them at the line by 0.5 sec. Finishing in a time of 6:40.8, the boat consisted of Jake Conrad, Colin Schembri, Bo Wowtschuk, Steve Atwell, George Greendyke, Erich Dix, Tyler Patrick, Nick Cosenza, and Will Rimmler, all members of the Class of 2012.
In the final race of the morning, the Varsity 4, beat Bates in a dual race, finishing in a time of 7:40.1, cox’n Bailea McMillen (So), was joined by Evan Steckle (Jr), James Heuser (Jr),Billy Campbell (Fr), and Chris Bodner (Fr).
Coast Guard returns to Lake Quinsigamond next Saturday to compete in the New England Championship Regatta. With over 30 schools and 185 entries, it should be an exciting day of racing.
