Women's Crew - Bears Faced Some of Nation's Best Print E-mail
PITTSFIELD, MASS.--(4/25/09)--The Bears took on some tough competition this weekend. Racing on beautiful water under (finally) sunny skies, the Bears faced three of the top ranked DIII teams in the nation in Williams (1), Bates (2), and Ithaca (4) in addition to DI Marist for the second time this season.

The Varsity 8 started the day of racing, finishing 5th in a time of 7:28.1. The 1V consisted of Cate Gillen (‘09), Lauren Milici (’09), Sarah Jane Otey (‘11), Rachel Thomas (‘12), Maggie Ward (‘09), Kate Dacimo (‘10), Holly Madden (‘12), Kelli Normolye (‘12), and Rory Keegan (‘09).

In the women’s Novice 8 event, Coast Guard was solidly in second place, down to Ithaca but ahead of Bates and Marist, until the last 50 meters of the race where Bates edged them out by 1.5 seconds. Christa Funk (’12), Tiffany Zehnle (’12), Beki Redston (’11), Katie Ward (’12), Emily Balingit-Clark (’12), Erin Nolan (’12), Fallon Bowers (’12), Katie Preising (’12), and Juliana Harvin (’12) will face this competiton again on the water next weekend.

In the final race of the day, the Coast Guard Varsity 4 took on entries from Williams and Marist. In a solid race, the V4 boat, coxed by Sarah Troch (’12), finished 4th in a time of 8:52.3. The V4 rowers were Yahiara Cervantes (‘10), Rachel Douglas (‘10), Tara Mead (’12) and Christine Roselli (’12).

Coast Guard returns to Lake Quinsigamond next Saturday to compete in the New England Championship Regatta. With over 30 schools and 185 entries, it should be an exciting day of racing.
