NEW LONDON, CONN.--Freshman Allison Baker fired a two-hit shutout while sophomore Megan Roy was 4 for 4 with a homer and three RBI’s as fifth-seeded Wheaton blanked fourth-seeded Babson 8-0 in six innings in game one of the 2011 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Softball tournament.
Baker allowed just a pair of singles did not walk a batter and struck out one to improve to 14-10 on the seasonn.
Senior Katy Salka also had a big game at the plate as she was 3 for 4 with a homer and two runs scored while senior Nicole DeRosa had a pair of hits in the win.
Wheaton got on the board in the second when Roy and DeRosa led off with back-to-back singles. They moved up on a bunt by senior Rachel Merrick and Roy scored on a dropped fly ball in shallow right field.
The Lyons added two runs in the third for a 3-0 lead as junior Amanda Poplaski led off with a walk and Salka singled. Senior Kristen Hunt moved them over with a bunt before an RBI single by Roy and an RBI groundout by DeRosa.
Salka led off the fifth with a line drive homer to right center for a 4-0 lead.
Senior Kristen Hunt delivered a two-run single in the sixth before Roy added a two-run blast as the Lyons scored four times in the sixth and then got three outs to enforce the eight-run rule.
Sophomore Megan Brain (9-7) went 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, four runs, three earned while walking one and fanned two in taking the loss.
