Ben Barrett pitched five solid innings of relief for the Bears.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/14/09)--Senior Conor Fahey allowed just two singles and struck out ten over eight innings and WPI scored nine times in the fourth inning enroute to a 13-0 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Fahey (4-1) allowed a leadoff single to freshman Joe Petry and a single to senior Steve Lewis in the sixth and also walked just one while recording double figure strikeouts for the fourth time this season.
WPI (18-9, 7-3) got all it would need in the third on a sacrifice fly by junior Joe Walsh and a bases loaded walk to freshman Mitch McClune for a 2-0 lead.
The Engineers sent 13 batters to the plate in the fourth and scored nine runs to take an 11-0 lead. Freshman Nick Bean had an RBI double, junior Mark Dignum had a two-run single, junior Mike Swanton added an RBI double and junior Cody McGregor closed out the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Coast Guard sophomore Ben Barrett pitched five solid innings of relief allowing just five hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out one. Senior Pete Schofield (3-3) worked the first three innings and took the loss.
Dignum, Bean and McGregor each had two hits for WPI.
Junior Keith Laird had a double in the ninth, the only extra base hit for Coast Guard.
