Courtney Wolf hit a walk off homer, her school record tenth this season as the Bears extended their winning streak to 22. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/13/09)--New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Player of the Week Courtney Wolf hit a walk off solo homer, her school-record tenth of the season, in the bottom of the seventh as Coast Guard ran its winning streak to 22 and completed a sweep of Babson winning game two 2-1 after winning the opener 4-0.
Freshman Hayley Feindel, the NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week, fired a one-hit shutout while striking out 10 in the opener as Coast Guard, the #1 team in New England, improved to 26-2 overall and remained unbeaten at 11-0 in NEWMAC play at the end of the doubleheader sweep.
Feindel set the single-season school strikeout record in the first inning of game one. She entered with 202 strikeouts this season, one shy of the mark of 203 set by Colleen Perry in 2003. Feindel struck out the side in order in the first. Feindel walked two and allowed just a single to freshman Annie Dursema leading off the fourth.
Senior Annette Boston was 3 for 3 in game one and scored the Bears first three runs, each time leading off with a single, in the first, third and fifth innings. She scored on an RBI single by junior Courtney Wolf in the first, she scored on a throwing error in the third and she came across on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Amanda Frederick in the fifth.
Coast Guard closed the scoring on an RBI single by Becky Miller in the sixth.
Senior Colleen Denny had a pair of hits for the Bears in the game one win.
Sophomore Caroline Barr (2-7) went the distance for the Beavers in game one and allowed three earned runs, nine hits while striking out three.
In game two, Feindel and Babson junior Danielle Liska hooked up in a pitcher’s duel.
Liska retired the first nine batters in order before Boston led off the fourth with a single to left and advanced to second on an error. Senior Jeannie Crump bunted her to third before Frederick’s sacrifice fly gave the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Jessica Pashos hit a solo homer to center in the sixth to tie the game. Pashos has two of the Beavers four hits in the game.
Feindel (22-1), who leads all of Division III with 22 wins, allowed just four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out seven to bring her school-record season strikeout total to 219.
Liska (12-6), was the tough luck loser, she allowed just three hits and one earned run, didn’t walk a batter and struck out nine.
Wolf's tenth homer of the year broke the school-record of nine set by Suzie Van der Veer in the 2002 season. Van der Veer holds the Bears' career mark with 16 homers, Wolf now has 15 for her career. |
