Softball - Bears Sweep; Run Win Streak to Eight
Becky Miller had two hits and three RBIs in the game one win.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/22/09)--Freshmen Nicole Black and Hayley Feindel combined on a four-hit shutout in game two of a doubleheader as Coast Guard completed a sweep of Castleton State 11-3 in six innings and 3-0 to run its win streak to eight.
Black, making her first career start, worked 5 2/3 innings in the night cap allowing four hits while not walking a batter and striking out eight. Feindel came on in the sixth with the go ahead run at the plate and recorded a strikeout before fanning two more in the seventh to record her first career save.
Coast Guard (12-2) got the only run it would need in the third as senior Annette Boston scored on an RBI ground out by sophomore Amanda Frederick. The Bears added a run in the fifth as Frederick tripled, her second of the game, and scored on an error and another run in the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore Anna Funk.
In the opener, Boston and freshman Maddie Buchert each had three hits while sophomore Becky Miller had two hits and three RBI’s including a two-run single which highlighted a four-run first as the Bears led from start to finish.
Castleton State scored three times in the top of the second to chase Coast Guard starter, junior Crystal Lee Coonan. Feindel came on with the bases loaded and got back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the ining.
Feindel worked 4 2/3 innings in the opener allowing just two hits, one walk while striking out 10 to improve to 10-1 on the season while lowering her ERA to 0.69. The freshman phenom has not allowed an earned run in her last 24 1/3 innings.
Junior Courtney Wolf’s two-run homer was part of a four-run fourth as the Bears took a 10-3 lead.
