Joe Petry picked up his first collegiate win with seven solid innings.
FORT MYERS, FLA.—(3/11/09)—Freshman Joe Petry went seven innings and allowed three earned runs to pickup his first collegiate win while senior Steve Lewis and junior Keith Laird each had three hits and an RBI as Coast Guard beat Southern Vermont 9-8 at the Gene Cusic Classic.

Petry, making his first college start, allowed five runs, three earned while walking two and striking out two.

Southern Vermont (1-6) scored three times in the top of the ninth to pull to within 9-8 before senior Pete Schofield got a fly out to center with the bases loaded to end the game and pickup the save.

The Mountaineers scored twice in the top of the first before the Bears scored five times in the home half as freshman Eddie Kalankiewicz, Laird and senior Bill Birch all had RBI singles.

Lewis and junior John Jeffares had back-to-back RBI singles in the third as the Bears increased the lead to 8-4 after three innings.

Freshman Nic Freburg, Kalankiewicz and Birch each had two hits for the Bears, who finished with 15 hits.

Coast Guard improves to 2-3.
