Pete Schofield was outstanding in the game one win for the Bears.
FT. MYERS, FLA.—-(3/8/09)—-Senior Pete Schofield pitched a complete game scattering five hits and not allowing an earned run in the opener as Coast Guard beat Merchant Marine 12-2 before the Mariners scored 11 runs in the first two innings and held on for a 12-10 win in the nightcap as the teams split a doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic.

Coast Guard (1-2) exploded for nine runs in the third inning of game one to erase a 1-0 deficit. The Bears had seven hits and took advantage of four errors sending 13 men to the plate in the third inning.

Freshman Nic Freburg had a two-run single in the third while freshman Eddie Kalankiewicz, senior Bill Birch and junior John Jeffares each had RBI singles in the inning.

Schofield (1-0) allowed an unearned run in the second inning and another in the fourth. He got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first and allowed just three singles over the final six innings and finished with four walks and six strikeouts.

Kalankiewicz, Freburg and senior Kevin Keefe each had two hits as the Bears collected 10 hits in the opener. Keefe also scored three runs and drove in another in the win.

In game two, Coast Guard starter, senior Kevin Thomas, had to leave with an injury in the first and the Mariners scored four in the first and seven more in the second for an 11-2 lead.

Freshman Joe Petry was outstanding in the relief for the second straight day as he worked 4 1/3 innings allowing five hits and one earned run keeping the Bears in the game.

Merchant Marine (1-1) led 12-3 after five innings, but Coast Guard would not go quietly as the Bears scored four in the sixth with sophomore Tom Morrow highlighting the inning with a pinch hit inside the park two-run homer, in just the second at bat of his career.

Coast Guard added four more in the seventh with Birch delivering an RBI single and then Freburg adding a two-run double, which made it 12-10 with just one out before the Mariners got the final two outs to salvage the split.

Senior Eric Anderson got the win in relief for the Mariners while Thomas took the loss.

Freshman Chris Izurieta making his collegiate debut was 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and two runs scored while Freburg added two more hits and three RBI’s in game two.

The teams will meet again Monday night at 6 p.m in Fort Myers, Fla., in the final game of the three game series.
