 Senior Steve Lewis reached base all five times in the season opening loss. FT. MYERS, FLA.--(3/7/09)--Eastern Nazarene took advantage of six walks, a hit batter and three wild pitches total in the fifth and sixth innings as they scored seven runs enroute to an 8-3 win over Coast Guard at the Gene Cusic Classic, the season opener for both teams.
Sophomore Jesse Karr, who took the loss, worked into the fifth and left with the game tied 2-2 and two runners on, the Bears bullpen gave up two more runs, both on wild pitches in the fifth and then four more in the sixth on three walks, two hits, a hit batter and a two-run error.
Freshman Joe Petry was impressive in his collegiate debut as he worked the final 2 2/3 innings allowing just two singles while striking out three. He also singled in his first collegiate at bat, his only plate appearance in the game.
Eastern Nazarene took the lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Nate Leaser. Coast Guard answered in the second with and RBI single by senior Steve Lewis which scored junior Ryan Milligan.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the third as senior Bill Birch led off with a single, stole second and later scored on a passed ball before Eastern Nazarene scored seven runs in the fifth and six to take control.
Lewis, the Bears leadoff hitter, had a great opening day as he reached base all five times with a single, triple a pair of walks and he was hit by a pitch. He also drove in a run.
Senior Kevin Keefe also had two hits for the Bears. |
