CAMBRIDGE, MASS.—(2/22/09)—Sophomore Kim Shadwick won three events breaking three of her own school records and a pair of meet records, she swam the anchor leg of a relay team which placed second to earn All-Conference honors breaking seven school records (individual and relay) in all as Coast Guard placed fourth at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship at MIT.

Coast Guard finished with 461 points, Springfield won the meet for the ninth straight season. The Pride finished with 872.5 points.

Shadwick captured the 200 freestyle championship for the second straight season, breaking both school and NEWMAC Championship records with a NCAA “B” cut time of 1:53.07.

She won her second conference championship of the meet in the 500 freestyle as she blew away the field with a school, meet and open record time of 5:00.10, winning the event by over nine seconds.

In her final individual event, the 1,650 freestyle, in which she placed second last season, she shattered her own school record and won by over six seconds with an NCAA “B” cut time of 17:19.89. Her 1,000 split time of 10:29.47 also set a school record.

Freshman Sam Sworden placed third in the event with a time of 17:52.46 and she set a school-record in the 200 butterfly (2:14.59).

Freshman Heidi Gayman won the NEWMAC championship in the 100 freestyle with a school-record and an NCAA “B” cut time of 52.56.

Shadwick teamed with Sworden, sophomore Sarah-Jane Otey and Gayman to earn All-conference honors with a second place finish in the 800 freestyle relay with a school-record and NCAA “B” cut time of 7:51.99. They became the first Coast Guard women's relay team to make an NCAA time.

Sophomore Mary Canavan set a school-record with 316 points in the 1-meter diving event.

The 400 free relay team of Otey, Gayman, Emily Zalewski and Shadwick, set a school record and posted an NCAA “B” time of 3:33.16.

The 200 free relay (Gayman, Zalewski, Otey, Shadwick)set a school record with a time of 1:38.86 while the 400 medley relay team of Sworden, senior Krystyna Vihonski, Shadwick and Gayman) also set a school record with a time of 4:03.73.

Otey had an NCAA “B” time in the 100 freestyle leading off the 400 freestyle relay (53.02), and 200 freestyle (1:55.80).

Vihonski had an NCAA “B” time in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.20).

The NCAA Division III Championships will be held March 18-21st at the University of Minnesota.
