Tim Berry had a huge day leading the Bears over rival Merchant Marine.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(1/24/09)--Timmy Berry set the pool record in the 100 backstroke, won the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM and was part of the 200 medley relay team which also set a pool record as Coast Guard handed rival Merchant Marine its first dual meet loss of the season, beating the Mariners 179-121.

Berry’s time of 53.30 in the 100 backstroke broke the pool record set by former Coast Guard All-American and national champion Bob Hueller (53.54) while the medley relay team of Berry, Sauve, Jim Okorn and Johnson Knox posted a time of 1:35.93 breaking the record of 1:40.05 set in 2001 by Coast Guard. Berry posted a winning time of 1:55.55 in the 200 backstroke and 1:59.14 in the 200 IM.

Mike Carman also set a pool record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:09.23, breaking the record of 2:11.09 set by Coast Guard’s Ryan Caple in 2005.

Okorn broke All-American Bobby Brown’s 100 freestyle pool record of 47.33 with a split time of 46.71 in the first leg of the 400 freestyle relay in which he teamed with Bryan Andrews, Dan Beshoar and Knox for the win.

Okorn also won the 50 freestyle (21.53) and the 100 freestyle (47.53) while Sauve won the 100 breaststroke (59.50) and Dan Alley won the 200 butterfly (1:59.70).

Coast Guard is now 6-2 overall on the season and combined with the women’s win over the Mariners, the overall score for the Superintendent’s Trophy, contested for each season between Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine Academy, is now tied at 4-4.
