Nicole Gurr became the Bears all-time leader with 1,815 kills. Coast Guard saw its streak of postseason appearances come to an end as the Bears, who had made six straight appearances in postseason play (ECAC or NCAA Tournament) finished 14-16 overall and 5-4 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).
The Bears got off to a tough start, dropping their first six matches of the season, four at the very tough Haverford Tournament to open the season, and they were never able to get over the .500 mark.
The team did however keep its streak of appearances in the NEWMAC tournament semifinals alive as the fourth-seeded Bears beat fifth-seeded Smith 3-0 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals for the eighth straight season.
Smith had beaten Coast Guard 3-2 in a road game for the Bears during the regular season.
Coast Guard was perfect at home winning all 13 matches, but the team was just 1-16 away from home.
Senior Nicole Gurr closed out her brilliant career by being named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America team for the third straight season.
Gurr, the Bears all-time leader with 1,815 kills, was named All-New England by the New England Women’s Volleyball Association (NEWVA) for the fourth straight season. She was named to the second team this year after earning first team honors in 2006 and 2007. Gurr was also named to the second team in 2005.
The senior middle blocker also earned All-region honors from the AVCA for the third straight season and was named honorable mention All-America for the second straight season after being a second-team All-America in 2006 when the Bears advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament.
Gurr, who led the team this season with 394 kills and 65 aces and was second with 94 blocks, finished her career with 237 aces which is third on the Bears’ all-time list and 300 career blocks which ranks her fourth in school history.
Senior Mary Bitzer, the only other senior on the team, was second on the team with 202 kills to go with her 117 digs.
