VALLEJO, CA.—(11/22/08)—Lauren Westbrook had a game-high 24 points including a pair of free throws with 14.8 seconds left as host California Maritime beat Coast Guard 49-44 in the consolation game of the Maritime Classic Basketball Tournament.

Westbrook’s free throws gave the Keelhaulers a 48-44 lead with 14.8 seconds left as the Bears dropped their third straight to open the season.

Coast Guard junior Melissa Martinelli and Westbrook were the only players to score in the first nine minutes of the game, with Westbrook and the Keelhaulers lead the Bears 8-7 with 11 minutes left.

Cal. Maritime then scored eight of the next ten points to take a 16-9 lead with 5:01 left in the first half. The Keelhaulers led 23-17 at halftime and scored the first basket of the second half to take its largest lead 25-17.

Coast Guard (0-3) got back in the game using a 13-2 run to take a 30-27 lead with 13:23 left. Sophomore Jennifer Tamminen, who earned a spot on the All-tournament team, had seven points in that stretch for the Bears.

Junior Crystal Lee Coonan gave Coast Guard its first lead since the opening minutes, and its final lead of the game, on a basket with 8:32 left for a 37-36 advantage.

Martinelli and Tamminen led the Bears with 18 points and 10 rebounds each, accounting for 36 of the team’s 44 points. Coast Guard was just 15 of 55 from the field (27.3 percent) while making just two of 18 from 3-point range.

Cal. Maritime was 18 for 52 from the floor (34.6 percent) while connecting on three of 10 from 3-point range.
