NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/12/08)--Coast Guard senior Peter Deneen’s goal in the 100th minute gave head coach Chris Parsons his 100th career win as the third-seeded Bears beat sixth-seeded St. Joseph’s (Maine) 1-0 in overtime in the first round of the ECAC Division III New England tournament.

Deneen has made it a habit of scoring game winners in overtime this season as this was his fourth game winning goal, third in overtime this year.

Coast Guard (11-8-1), making its third straight appearance in the ECAC Tournament and fifth in the last six years, dominated play outshooting St. Joseph’s 27-7, but the Bears couldn’t find the back of the net in regulation.

Senior David O’Brien picked up a loose ball in the box off a long throw and played it across the face of goal to Deneen who buried it in the back of the net with 51 seconds left in overtime for the win.

Junior Will Pike was solid in goal for the Monks making 10 saves while Coast Guard junior Tim Olah did not need to make a save to register his sixth shutout of the season as the Bears improved to 9-1-1 at home this season.

This was the first ECAC tournament appearance for St. Joseph’s which finishes the season 12-7-3.

Coast Guard advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2004. The Bears will play at second-seeded Curry on Saturday at noon. Top-seeded Eastern Connecticut will host fourth-seeded Husson in the other semifinal. The ECAC Championship game will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the highest remaining seed.
