 Nicole Gurr had 17 kills to lead the Bears to their 20th straight home win. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/30/08)--Senior Nicole Gurr had a match-high 17 kills as Coast Guard won its 20th straight home match dating back to last season with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 11-25, 25-23) win over Roger Williams in a non-conference game, the final regular season home game of the season.
Coast Guard (13-14) raced out to an 11-4 lead in the opening set before Roger Williams scored six straight to pull to within 11-10. Coast Guard maintained its one point lead at 14-13 before scoring four straight for a 18-13 lead and the Bears would never look back winning the first game 25-18.
The Bears, who are a perfect 12-0 at home this season, scored the first nine points of the second game behind the serving of sophomore Ashley Bullard. Roger Williams got a close as two at 18-16 before the Bears scored seven of the final eight points, including the final five points, for the 25-17 win.
Roger Williams (19-13) jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third game, increased the lead to 21-7, cruising to a 25-11 win.
The fourth game was a back-and-forth contest that was tied 15 times, the latest at 20-20 before Gurr served four straight points for a 24-20 lead. The Hawks fought off three match points before Coast Guard won 25-23.
Gurr also added eight digs, three blocks and four aces while senior Mary Bitzer had eight kills, junior Courtney Wolf led the way with six blocks and sophomore Jessica Anderson led the Bears with 19 digs.
Sophomore Rebekah Dion led Roger Williams with 11 kills while junior Kristina Dolan added 10 kills. Sophomore Jill Hurd had 15 digs and three aces while senior Kirsten Bosworth had a match-high 35 assists. |
