HOLYOKE, MASS.--(10/28/08)--With a spot in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament at stake, Mount Holyoke scored twice in the first half and made it standup beating Coast Guard 2-1 in the regular season finale for both teams.
Mount Holyoke secures a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time since 2005 while Coast Guard misses the tournament for the fifth straight season and ends the season 5-11 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
The Lyons jumped out to a 1-0 edge just 4:22 into the contest, when sophomore Yuko Takahashi netted her team leading ninth tally of the fall. After intercepting a pass, the midfielder fired a shot from the right side of the box toward the lower left corner of the goal. Coast Guard freshman goalkeeper Mary Mills got her hands on the ball, but it eventually trickled over the goal line and into the net.
Mount Holyoke extended its cushion to 2-0 on senior Emmy Fontaine’s third goal of the season in the 27th minute. Emily Lomax was credited with the assist on the play, as her crossing pass from the right side found a wide open Fontaine in the middle of the box. The midfielder gathered the pass and blasted a shot past Mills into the lower left corner of the goal. It proved to be the second winner of the year for the Lyons lone senior, who was playing at home for the final time of her career. Prior to the match, Fontaine was honored for her contributions to the program of the past three years.
The first half was dominated by the hosts. Mills made several sprawling saves to keep the Bears within striking range entering the second stanza. Coast Guard was able to apply some pressure before the break but had no great scoring chances.
The Bears came on strong in the early stages of the second half. In the 47th minute, junior forward Katie Kurek broke past the Lyons defense and slipped a shot past junior goalkeeper Elaine Harvey from just outside the box. Her attempt rolled toward the goal and hit the post. On the rebound, a shot by senior Trish Ohle sailed high.
Ohle finally got the Bears on the board in the 51st minute. After collecting a long pass from freshman Shannah Shelton on the left side, she dribbled into the box and ripped a shot past Harvey. Ohle’s second marker of the fall sliced the deficit to 2-1.
From there, the teams went scoreless. Mills made several more outstanding saves to keep things close, but it was not enough for the Bears, who failed to qualify for the NEWMAC Tournament for the fifth season in a row.
Harvey made nine saves en route to her sixth win of the year. Mills took the loss despite stopping 15 shots. |
