Mary Mills kept the Bears close with numerous saves in the first half. BABSON, MASS.--(10/25/08)--The Babson College women’s soccer team erupted for four goals in the final 21 minutes to defeat the visiting United States Coast Guard Academy, 4-0, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at Hartwell-Rogers field.
With the victory, the Beavers improved to 10-3-5 overall and 5-0-3 in league play while remaining in the hunt for the top seed in next week’s conference tournament. Coast Guard slipped to 5-10-0 overall and 1-7-0 in the NEWMAC with the loss.
Coast Guard can still qualify for the conference tournament if its beats Mount Holyoke on Tuesday in the regular season finale.
Senior tri-captain Jackie Graham scored two goals and added an assist in the win for Babson, while sophomores Kristy Benoit and Patty also added scores. Sophomore Sarah Macary went the distance in net and did not face a shot on goal for the Beavers, as she earned her sixth shutout of the season.
Coast Guard freshman goalkeeper Mary Mills kept her team in the game with a fabulous first half in net, as she made six of her 11 saves, including numerous denials on clean breakaways. She made a nice leaping tip on an open look by Pytlik in the 17th minute of the contest and then made a spectacular diving save to her left on a open shot by Benoit from the left side of the box at the 25-minute mark.
The Bears defense continued to be the story early in the second half, which was otherwise dominated by Babson. Sophomore Ellen McCurdy won a ball from Mills and nearly put the Beavers in front at the 51-minute mark, but Coast Guard freshman back Melissa Eding made a huge block on the goal line to deny the ensuing shot attempt. Graham then hit a one-timer off a feed from Pytlik from point blank range in the 59th minute, but Mills made another tremendous stop to keep the game scoreless.
Babson was frustrated again in the 67th minute when Benoit hit a beautiful bending shot from the left end line that caromed off the far right post and was cleared. However, the Beavers finally broke through three minutes later, when Graham took the ball out of scramble in front of the net and poked a shot off a defender and inside the left post at 69:23. That opened the floodgates for Babson, which scored three more times in the next 10 minutes to run away with the victory. Graham netted her second of the game and 11th of the season off a Pytlik pass at 70:48 and then set up Benoit on her first collegiate goal at 76:51. Pytlik capped off the 4-0 win at 79:47, as she converted a feed from junior Kayla Pomponi for her ninth goal of the year.
