Women's Soccer - Bears Win; End NEWMAC Losing Streak at 23 Games
Freshman Erin Nolan scored the game winning goal as the Bears snapped a 23-game NEWMAC losing streak.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/11/08)--Three different players scored as Coast Guard snapped a 23-game losing streak in conference play with a 3-1 win over Smith in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.
Senior Emma Marr gave the Bears a 1-0 lead, 10:02 into the match with junior Katie Kurek assisting.
Coast Guard (5-6, 1-3) increased its lead to 2-0 when freshman Erin Nolan took a pass from classmate Shannah Shelton in the 21st minute and the Bears took that lead into the half.
Smith (2-10, 1-3) cut the lead in half when junior Etta Grover-Silva scored in the 57th minute.
The Bears put their first conference win since the 2005 season, a 2-1 win over Mount Holyoke, away on Kurek’s goal with senior Jen Ferreira assisting in the 73rd minute. Kurek is a transfer from Smith and played for the Pioneers during the 2004 season.
Coast Guard outshot Smith 10-8.
Freshman Mary Mills made seven saves to pickup the win while senior Lauren Bactel made one save for Smith in the loss.
