 Senior Nicole Gurr had 27 kills as the Bears won twice on Saturday. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/11/08)--Senior Nicole Gurr had 27 kills while classmate Mary Bitzer added 18 kills as Coast Guard came from behind in both matches and swept a tri-match beating Brandeis 3-2 (25-17, 14-25, 9-25, 25-21, 17-15) and Keene State 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-16).
The Bears are now 10-9 overall, a perfect 9-0 at home and over .500 for the first time all season.
In the first match of the day, Brandeis beat Coast Guard 25-9 in set three to take a 2-1 lead before the Bears rallied and finished the match with a thrilling 17-15 win in set five.
Gurr had 10 kills, 17 digs and seven blocks while Bitzer added nine kills and nine digs.
Also for Coast Guard, junior Courtney Wolf had seven kills and three blocks and junior Carin Sweeney added five kills, three blocks, 15 digs and two aces. Sophomore Jessica Anderson led the way with 24 assists.
Sophomore Paige Blasco led Brandeis (10-8) with 16 kills and nine digs, classmate Nicole Smith added 13 kills and senior Lorraine Wingenbach had 11 kills and a team-high 14 digs.
Brandeis beat Keene State 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-12) in the second match of the day as Blasco had 14 kills and nine digs and Wingenbach added 12 kills, 12 digs and three aces to lead the Judges.
Freshman Bridget O’Bryant led Keene State with 12 kills while senior Sarah Peterson had a team-best 21 digs.
In the final match of the day, Coast Guard dropped the first set but won the final three as Gurr led the way with 17 kills, seven blocks, 21 digs and four aces. Bitzer and freshman Nicole Johnson each had nine kills while Wolf had five kills and eight blocks.
Anderson had 24 digs while sophomore Ashley Bullard had 28 assists and 10 assist for the Bears.
Bridget O’Bryant led Keene State (17-8) with 10 kills while her sister, senior Brittany O’Bryant had seven kills and two blocks. Junior Abby Rosen led the Owls with 13 digs.
