 Carin Sweeney led the Bears with 14 digs in the loss. MEDFORD, MASS.--(10/8/08)--Tufts defeated visiting Coast Guard 3-1 in a non-conference match at Cousens Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The Jumbos won by set scores of 25-19, 25-20, 19-25 and 25-13 to improve to 17-1 overall. Coast Guard's three-match win streak ended as they fell to 8-9.
The first two sets were tightly contested. Tufts overcame an early deficit to take a 10-9 lead in the first set and did not trail from that point. The match was tied at 17-17, then Tufts finished with eight of the final 10 points. Senior Maya Ripecky closed the set with an ace.
The second set was very similar, with a tight margin between the teams throughout. Tufts again finished strong. Leading 18-17, they scored seven of the final 10 points to take a 2-0 lead.
Coast Guard blew open a 19-6 lead in the third set, then weathered a Tufts comeback. The Jumbos got to within 22-17, but Coast Guard went on to the 25-19 victory.
Tufts took a 14-5 lead in the fourth set and never looked back in a 25-13 win for the match victory.
Senior tri-captain Stacy Filocco paced the hosts with 11 kills while adding 16 digs and two blocks. Sophomore Nancy Shrodes added eight kills to the attack as the Jumbos spread the offense around. Ripecky finished the match with three aces and a team-high 17 digs, while also handling 17 pass attempts perfectly. Senior tri-captain Natalie Goldstein had 16 digs and 26 clean pass attempts. Junior Dena Feiger posted 40 assists in the four sets.
Senior co-captain Nicole Gurr was a stand-out for Coast Guard, finishing with 19 kills, three blocks and two aces. Classmate Mary Bitzer added seven kills and two aces, both during an eight-point run at the service line during the third set. Junior Carin Sweeney led the defense with 14 digs, while sophomore Ashley Bullard finished with 11 digs and 15 assists.
