Senior quarterback Niles Pierson had a career-high 127 rushing yards in the win on Homecoming Weekend.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/4/08)--Senior quarterback Niles Pierson had a career-high 127 yards rushing and two touchdowns while junior running back Steve Arguelles had a career-high 121 yards rushing and a score while finishing with 206 all-purpose yards as Coast Guard won its 16th straight New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division game beating Mass. Maritime 30-6 on Homecoming Weekend.

Coast Guard, the two-time defending NEFC Bogan Division champions, rushed for a season-high 365 yards and three scores on 58 carries while freshman Jacob Shackleford was three-for-three on field goal attempts, converting from 37, 24 and 34 yards.

The Bears finished with a season-high 458 yards of total offense while holding the Buccaneers to 204 total yards, 95 passing.

Mass. Maritime (0-5, 0-2) turned the ball over on downs at the Coast Guard 33-yard line on its first possession and Shackleford kicked a 37-yard field goal to cap the Bears first possession of the day for a 3-0 lead with 7:38 left in the first quarter.

Arguelles had a 67-yard punt return down to the MMA five-yard line and Pierson scored two plays later on a five-yard run as the Bears took a 10-0 lead with 1:35 left in the opening period.

Shackleford’s 24-yard field goal with 4:30 left in the first half, was the only scoring in the second quarter and Coast Guard led 13-0 at halftime.

Arguelles gave the Bears a 20-0 lead with a 49-yard touchdown run, his first career rushing touchdown, with 7:49 left in the third quarter.

The Bucs had the ball in great field position on its next possession following a 65-yard kickoff return by junior Kevin McCarthy, but they turned the ball over on downs.

Coast Guard (2-2, 2-0) then went 81 yards in 13 plays with Pierson scoring on a one-yard touchdown for a 27-0 lead with 1:57 left in the third quarter.

Shackleford gave the Bears a 30-0 lead with a 34-yard field goal with 10:40 left in the game.

Mass. Maritime got on the board as third string quarterback freshman Kyle Moon (5 for 5, 65 yards) threw a 18-yard touchdown pass to classmate Kyle Rowe with 1:47 left in the game, the extra point was no good. Rowe led the Bucs with three receptions for 45 yards.

Pierson finished 12 of 20 for 77 yards while freshman quarterback Jarrod Owens was 2 for 4 for 16 yards while rushing for 51 yards on 11 carries. Sophomore Matt Tolliver had a career-high nine catches for 63 yards to lead Coast Guard.

Senior linebacker Brian Yurovich led Coast Guard with 13 tackles, 10 solo, three for loss, one sack and the only interception in the game. Sophomore linebacker Kyle Ennis added 10 tackles, eight solo.

Freshman quarterback Nick Montalto led the Bucs with 20 carries for 72 yards. Senior quarterback Joe DeFrank was 4 of 9 for 32 yards and an interception in the two quarterback system.

Freshman Richard Thompson led Mass. Maritime with 11 tackles, eight solo with two pass breakups.

Coast Guard has now beaten Mass. Maritime seven straight times, the last time the Bucs beat the Bears was in the 1999 season.
