Peter Deneen's goal in double overtime gave the Bears a 4-3 win over #15 Wheaton.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/3/08)--Senior Peter Deneen scored his first goal of the season with 3:21 left in double overtime as Coast Guard upset defending New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and tournament champion Wheaton 4-3 to kickoff Homecoming Weekend.

Wheaton (6-2-2, 1-1), ranked 15th nationally and second in New England, had its eight-game unbeaten streak against Coast Guard snapped as the Lyons were 7-0-1 vs. the Bears since a Coast Guard win in the 2000 season. It was also the first time in Wheaton's 20-year history that they lost when scoring at least three goals.

Deneen, who led the Bears with nine goal last season, picked the perfect time for his first goal of the season as took a pass from senior Thomas Cameron and scored giving the Bears the win after they had squandered a two goal lead.

Coast Guard (6-4, 2-1) had the first opportunity of the night but Wheaton sophomore Cole Davidson made a leaping save stopping a header from senior James Toohey in the 19th minute.

Junior Jacob Larsen gave Coast Guard a 1-0 lead when he scored off a rebound. Cameron’s shot hit the cross bar bounced straight down before Larsen buried the shot in the 27th minute.

Exactly two minutes later, Wheaton responded as senior Ben Resnicow scored on header off a throw in from sophomore Jake Wagner to tie the match 1-1.

Coast Guard took the lead in the 39th minute as sophomore Nick Devine blasted a shot past the keeper and the Bears took the 2-1 into the half.

In the early stages of the second half, Wheaton appeared to tie the game in the 59th minute, but offsides was called and just over a minute later Cameron took a pass from Devine and beat the keeper one-on-one with 30:35 left in the match as Coast Guard took a 3-1 lead.

Sophomore David Ferriero pulled the Lyons to within 3-2 on a goal off a scramble with exactly 19 minutes left.

Resnicow tied the match with just 1:58 remaining.

Junior Tim Olah made three saves to pickup the win in goal for Coast Guard while Davidson recored four saves for Wheaton, which had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Coast Guard outshot Wheaton 15-11 in a game which featured 13 yellow cards, seven for the Bears.
