CGA's Colgate 26s competing at the Pine Trophy.
New London, CT--(9/15/08)--The Coast Guard Academy Sailing Team finished 2nd at the Pine Trophy Sloop Intersectional sailed on the Thames River this past weekend. This highly competitive sloop regatta was named after Rear Admiral James Pine, Superintendant of the Coast Guard Academy from 1940-1947. On Saturday, regatta organizers cancelled racing for the day after waiting several hours with no wind. On Sunday, sailors were treated to a 5-10 knot Southerly breeze and were able to complete 7 races. CGA stayed incredibly consistent throughout all 7 races, finishing 4th in 5 races. The Bears also finished 1st in the 2nd race and 3rd in the 6th race. Sailing for the Bears were Sam Ingham '11, Jon Duffett '11, Will Cotta '11, and Geoff Single '10. The next sloop event is the New England Sloop Championship hosted by CGA on September 27 and 28 where the Bears will look to earn at berth to Nationals.

The CGA Women's Sailing Team also got off to a great start this weekend. On Saturday the team sailed at MIT for the Women's Man-Labs Trophy. Despite a lack of breeze all over New England, regatta organizers were able to find small amounts of breeze to get races started in. CGA finished 7th out of 16 teams. On Sunday the team traveled to Tufts for the Captain's Cup. They were greeted with much better wind and a steady rain, which made for much different sailing than the day before. The Bears finished 5th out of 12 teams at the Captain's Cup, with each division winning a race. Sailing for CGA were Krysta Rohde '11 and Kirstin Haas '10 in A Division and Jenn Proctor '11 and Margaret Woodbridge '10 in B Division.
