 Senior Nicole Gurr had game-high 18 kills as the Bears beat WNEC 3-1. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/10/08)--Senior Nicole Gurr had a game-high 18 kills including a perfect 6 for 6 in the final set as Coast Guard snapped its six-match losing streak and posted its first win of the season beating Western New England College 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-11) in a non-conference game.
WNEC jumped out to a 13-5 lead in set one and Coast Guard only got as close as five on two separate occasions, the last time at 22-17, before the Golden Bears won the opener 25-18.
Coast Guard (1-6) scored eight straight points, with junior Carin Sweeney serving, to take an 11-4 lead in set two before winning 25-15.
In set three, Coast Guard scored six straight, with sophomore Ashley Bullard serving, and seven of the final eight points to turn a 21-18 deficit into a 25-22 win.
The Bears led 9-3 in the fourth set and cruised to a 25-11 win.
Senior Mary Bitzer added 11 kills while sophomore Jessica Anderson led the way with 16 digs and Sweeney added 14 digs. Gurr also had 13 digs for the Bears.
Bullard led the way for Coast Guard with 18 assists while sophomore Heather Watka added 14 assists.
Sophomore Lauren Landri led Western New England (3-2) with eight kills to go with two blocks while senior Lizzie Manor had a team-high 13 digs. Sophomore Katharina Boes led the Golden Bears with a game-high 23 assists.
