Softball - Frederick Named Top Rookie; Joins Minton as All-Conference
Amanda Frederick was named first team All-conference and NEWMAC Rookie of the Year.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/29/08)--Coast Guard Academy freshman Amanda Frederick was named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rookie of the Year and a first team All-conference selection while sophomore Leanna Minton was named All-conference second team in voting by the league’s nine head coaches.
Frederick, who split the season between catcher and shortstop, set Coast Guard Academy single-season freshman records with seven home runs and 45 RBI. She led the NEWMAC in triples (5), RBI (45) and slugging percentage (.768) while also leading the team in batting average (.424), doubles (12), homers (7) and runs scored (34). Frederick was the only freshman named to the All-conference team this season.
She becomes just the second Coast Guard player to win NEWMAC Rookie of the Years honors. Colleen Perry was the only other Coast Guard player to win the award, she won it in 2004.
Minton earns second team All-conference honors for the second straight season. She was the leadoff hitter and was second on the team with a .390 batting average while leading the Bears with 55 hits and 25 stolen bases.
Senior Jenna Harvey from Wellesley was named both the NEWMAC Player and Pitcher of the Year while Kathy Mangano from Springfield earned Coach of the Year honors.
