 Colleen Denny had a huge day at the plate as she had five hits, three homers, eight RBI and scored six runs. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/20/08)--Colleen Denny was 5 for 7 with three home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored while Amanda Frederick set single season freshman school records in home runs and RBI’s as she was 5 for 8 with a homer, four RBI and four runs scored as Coast Guard split a non-conference doubleheader with Merchant Marine. The visiting Mariners won the opener 10-9 before Coast Guard won the nightcap 9-6.
Crystal Lee Coonan picked up the win in game two as she went the distance and allowed just one earned run on six hits.
In game two, Frederick highlighted a five run first inning with a three-run homer while Denny added a two-run shot in the inning.
Frederick now has a Coast Guard Academy freshman record seven homers and 41 RBI’s. The old mark was six homers and 39 RBI’s set by Lauren Felix in 1996.
Jeannie Crump and Frederick added RBI singles in the second while Denny hit a solo homer in the third for an 8-1 lead.
Merchant Marine (12-22-1) got two unearned runs in the fourth and three more unearned runs in the sixth with Jess LaValley delivering a two-run single as the Mariners closed to 9-6.
Karen Taylor worked the first three innings and took the loss for Merchant Marine as she allowed 10 hits and four earned runs.
Crump had two hits in each game for Coast Guard.
In game one, Kaitlyn Robbins hit a three-run homer in the first and the Mariners jumped out a 6-1 lead and held off the Bears.
Coast Guard (13-23) closed to 6-3 with two runs in the second on an RBI double by Denny, who later scored on a wild pitch.
The Mariners scored three runs in the fourth with LaValley and Cheyanne Loppnow having RBI singles for a 9-3 lead.
The Bears got one in the fourth and then Denny hit a two-out grand slam to center in the fifth to cut the lead to 9-8.
LaValley hit a long solo homer to left to lead off the sixth to give the Mariners a 10-8 lead.
In the Coast Guard seventh, Frederick led off with a double chasing starter and winner Marjorie Marino, and scored on an RBI single by Becky Miller. Taylor came on and got three of the four batters she faced, striking out two, to pick up the save.
Coonan went the distance and took the loss for the Bears.
LaValley had three hits and three RBI while Loppnow added a pair of hits in the game one win for Merchant Marine. |
