Softball - Bears Split; Left Out of NEWMAC Tournament
Becky Miller drove in a career-high four runs in the game two win.
NORTHAMPTON, MASS.--(4/19/08)--Coast Guard scored eight runs in the top of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie enroute to an 11-3 win in game two of a doubleheader to salvage a split with Smith after the Pioneers won the opener 11-2 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Both games were called early due to the eight-run rule with the opener going five innings and game two lasting six innings.
Both teams finish conference play at 6-10, but Smith won the tiebreaker and earned the sixth and final seed in the NEWMAC Tournament.
Freshman Becky Miller had a two-run double in the eight run inning as she drove in a career-high four runs with a double and triple in the nightcap.
In game two, Coast Guard took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a run by Leanna Minton but Smith responded with two in the bottom of the inning. The Bears went up 3-2 in the top of the second on a walk by Carin Sweeney who advanced to third on a double by Colleen Denny. Miller followed with a triple and drove in both runners.
Smith tied the game in the fifth inning when Kiefer singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Fryer and scored on a hit by Schoenen. Coast Guard blew the game open in the sixth as they scored the game winner unearned and added seven more for insurance.
Crystal Lee Coonan got the win for Coast Guard, allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
Denny was 3 for 3 with two runs scored in the win while Minton added two hits.
In game one, Smith scored six runs in the second for a 7-0 lead and the Pioneers never looked back.
Coonan took the loss in the opener for Coast Guard.
Amanda Frederick and Crump each had two hits in game one.
