 Chris Pappe earned All-conference honors for the second straight season. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/28/09)--Coast Guard junior Chris Pappe was named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-conference first team while Jim Hazlin was named Coach of the Year and the Bears won the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award for the third straight season in voting by the leagues six head coaches.
Pappe was named to the first team at the #3 singles position as he posted a 4-1 mark in NEWMAC play in that spot.
He earns All-conference honors for the second straight season. Last year, he was a second team selection at #2 singles.
The Bears finished the season 8-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference, advancing to the semifinals of the NEWMAC Tournament before falling to 11-time defending champion MIT. |

NORTON, MASS.--(4/25/09)--The top-seeded Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) men's tennis team's quest to remain the lone New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament champion in the league's 11-year history continued on Saturday, as the Engineers knocked off number-four United States Coast Guard Academy, 5-1 in the semifinals at Wheaton College's Clark Tennis Courts.
MIT improved to 15-2 while the Bears completed their season at 8-10 despite a strong showing.
Coast Guard took a point from MIT in doubles action, as junior Chris Pappe and freshman Greg Mitchell teamed for an 8-3 win in the top position, but Engineer senior David Iba and freshman Brian Wee countered by taking an 8-1 decision at two. |

 Nick Martin won both his singles and doubles matches to lead the Bears past Springfield. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/23/09)--The US Coast Guard Academy tennis team won its NEWMAC quarterfinal match against Springfield College tonight 5-1. The match was played to completion – i.e. stopped as soon as one team won five points.
The Bears adjusted its doubles line up and moved junior Chris Pappe and freshman Greg Mitchell to #1 after their strong performances against Springfield last Saturday and Conn College on Tuesday. The freshmen duo of Nick Martin and Wesley Figaro took the #2 spot, and senior captain Tim Ozimek and sophomore James Vuckovic played #3.
Springfield jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the #3 doubles. At the same time #1 and #2 doubles played dead even with scores of 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, etc. with CGA and Springfield taking turns holding the lead. |

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/22/09)--The US Coast Guard Academy tennis team lost at regionally ranked #15 Conn College 7-2.
Rain forced this match to be played indoors. The three doubles matches were played at Conn’s indoor courts. The singles were played with #1 - #3 playing at Conn while #4 - #6 went back to Roland Hall to play.
The first Bears point came from the new doubles pairing of freshman Greg Mitchell and Junior Chris Pappe - they won the #2 doubles 8-3. The second point was won by Greg Mitchell as he beat Conn College’s #1 player in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
The Bears also played well at #2, #3, and #4 singles. Chris Pappe took Conn’s #3 to three sets, losing 7-6(3), 1-6, 6-4. Nick Martin and Wesley Figaro had competitive first sets, losing 7-5, 6-2 and 7-5, 6-3 respectively.
