Men's Tennis - Bears Fall to Wesleyan 5-4

Blake Maurer won at #5 singles and was part of the #3 doubles team that picked up a win.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/15/09)--Coast Guard hosted Division-III New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Wesleyan University (12th ranked in the Northeast for 2008-2009) in ideal New England weather. Wesleyan won the dual match 5-4, but the Bears fought them to the wire and made them earn the victory.

All three doubles were close and took nearly two hours to complete. Freshmen Blake Maurer and Shaun Wilson, playing #3, were the first to finish, winning 8-5. Sophomores Nick Martin and Wesley Figaro, playing at #2, had to play a great final three games to take their match 9-7. On court #1, sophomore Greg Mitchell and senior Chris Pappe were serving for the match 8-7, but Wesleyan broke to make it 8-8. Then Wesleyan played a great tiebreaker, winning 7-3 to take the #1 doubles 9-8 and the Bears led 2-1.

Men's Tennis - Bears Open Season with 7-2 Win

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/12/09)--Coast Guard Academy started off the 2009-2010 season hosting Division-I Holy Cross today in weather conditions that threatened and eventually produced rain. The Bears won the dual match 7-2, taking all three doubles matches and #2, #3, #5, and #6 singles.

The doubles had the look of a sweep right from the start. At one point early on sophomore Greg Mitchell and senior team captain Chris Pappe, playing #1 doubles, were up 5-0. Sophomores Nick Martin and Wesley Figaro, playing at #2, and freshmen Blake Maurer and Shaun Wilson, playing #3, were up 3-0 in each of their matches. Martin and Figaro went on to win 8-5. Maurer and Wilson won 8-0.

Men's Tennis - Bears Win Three NEWMAC Awards

Chris Pappe earned All-conference honors for the second straight season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/28/09)--Coast Guard junior Chris Pappe was named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-conference first team while Jim Hazlin was named Coach of the Year and the Bears won the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award for the third straight season in voting by the leagues six head coaches.

Pappe was named to the first team at the #3 singles position as he posted a 4-1 mark in NEWMAC play in that spot.

He earns All-conference honors for the second straight season. Last year, he was a second team selection at #2 singles.

The Bears finished the season 8-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference, advancing to the semifinals of the NEWMAC Tournament before falling to 11-time defending champion MIT.
 
Men's Tennis - Bears Fall to MIT in NEWMAC Semi's
NORTON, MASS.--(4/25/09)--The top-seeded Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) men's tennis team's quest to remain the lone New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament champion in the league's 11-year history continued on Saturday, as the Engineers knocked off number-four United States Coast Guard Academy, 5-1 in the semifinals at Wheaton College's Clark Tennis Courts.

MIT improved to 15-2 while the Bears completed their season at 8-10 despite a strong showing.

Coast Guard took a point from MIT in doubles action, as junior Chris Pappe and freshman Greg Mitchell teamed for an 8-3 win in the top position, but Engineer senior David Iba and freshman Brian Wee countered by taking an 8-1 decision at two.
