NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/28/10)--Coast Guard won all nine matches in straight sets to remain unbeaten on the season with a 9-0 win over Salve Regina in a non-conference match.

Junior Greg Mitchell won 6-2, 6-2 at #1 singles, junior Nick Martin was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at #2 singles, freshman Austin Dean won 6-3, 6-2 (#3 singles), freshman Chris Hoffman won 6-3, 6-2 (#4 singles), freshman Josh Fischer was victorious 6-0, 6-0 (#5 singles) and senior Anthony Foss also won 6-0, 6-0 (#6 singles) as the Bears, who improve to 3-0 on the season, won the six singles matches.

Greg Mitchell teamed with Nick Martin to upset the #2 team in the doubles draw.

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS.--(9/25/10)--The U.S. Coast Guard Academy men’s tennis team sent its top two players, juniors Greg Mitchell and Nick Martin, to the ITA New England Regional Championships this weekend at Williams College. Both players entered the 64-player singles draw and paired to enter the 32-team doubles draw.

Martin, who drew Trey Meyer from Williams, dropped the first set 6-2, but won the second set 6-4, and toughed out the third 7-5. It had taken over two hours in very un-fall-like conditions with temperatures hovering around 90 degrees. To make matters worse, in the last game of the match Martin had rolled his ankle.

Mitchell drew Jeff Legunn of Wesleyan. Like Martin, Mitchell had trouble getting his game started as the seeded Legunn jumped out to a 3-0, then 4-1 lead in the first set. But Mitchell fought back to force a tiebreaker. He had chances in the tiebreaker, but fell 10-8. Greg never got started in the second set. Legunn advanced with a 7-6(8), 6-1 win.

Nick Martin won at #1 singles and #1 doubles in the win over Holy Cross.

WORCESTER, MASS.--(9/21/10)--Junior Nick Martin along with freshmen Austin Dean, Chris Hoffman and Josh Fischer won both their singles match and were part of a winning doubles team as Coast Guard beat Division I Holy Cross 5-2, playing under the Division I format where one point is awarded in doubles.

Coast Guard won the doubles point as the Bears swept the three doubles matches as junior Greg Mitchell teamed with Nick Martin to win at #1 singles, 8-2. Fischer and Hoffman won at #2 doubles, 8-2 while Dean and junior Matt Faha registered an 8-5 win at #3 doubles.

Men's Tennis - Bears Win Season Opener

Greg Mitchell won both his singles and doubles match to lead the Bears to a season opening win.

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/16/10)--Juniors Greg Mitchell and Nick Martin along with freshman Austin Dean won both their singles and doubles matches to lead Coast Guard to a 6-3 season opening win over Manhattanville. The match began outdoors, but finished indoors due to rain.

The Bears top three players were dominant in singles play as Mitchell won at #1 singles 6-1, 6-1 while Martin won at #2 singles, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win. Dean also won 6-1, 6-1 at #3 singles in his first collegiate match.
