WALTHAM, MASS.--(10/6/09)--The Coast Guard Academy men’s tennis team was on the road again for one last fall dual match, this time with Brandeis University. Brandeis had a program good enough to post a 5-4 win over the Bears last fall. This year they are awesome. The Judges won 9-0 and did so in dominating fashion. Head coach Ben Lamanna has added seven freshmen (three played in our match) and Nick White, a strong junior transfer from Trinity, to the team he had last year.
The one match the Bears were able to threaten was #1 singles. Sophomore Nick Martin played brilliant tennis and took the first set 6-3. Martin continued to play strong but Brandeis #1, Simon Miller, stayed even, and was able to break Martin’s serve to take a 5-4 lead. Miller held serve to win the second set 6-4. Martin fell behind in the third set super breaker 0-3, but fought back to even the score at 4-4. Brandeis took three of the next four points to go up 7-5. Martin played all out on the next three points hitting great shots - only to see Miller win them all with an amazing series of shots that included a topspin lob winner, an nearly impossible backhand overhead, and a nasty drop shot. |

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/1/09)--Coast Guard drove across the street to play a dual match with Connecticut College. The Bears, continuing to play without three starters, were unable to handle the strength and depth of the Connecticut squad that finished 2008-2009 ranked 15th in the Northeast, losing 6-3.
The bright moments for the Bears came at #1 doubles, and #1 and #3 singles. #1 doubles paired senior Chris Pappe with sophomore Nick Martin. Pappe and Martin continued to play outstanding doubles, dominating their opponent, and winning 8-2. Martin carried his strong play into #1 singles. He seemed to play effortlessly and “couldn’t miss” as he overwhelmed his opponent 6-1, 6-1. |

Blake Maurer won at #5 singles and was part of the #3 doubles team that picked up a win. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/15/09)--Coast Guard hosted Division-III New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Wesleyan University (12th ranked in the Northeast for 2008-2009) in ideal New England weather. Wesleyan won the dual match 5-4, but the Bears fought them to the wire and made them earn the victory.
All three doubles were close and took nearly two hours to complete. Freshmen Blake Maurer and Shaun Wilson, playing #3, were the first to finish, winning 8-5. Sophomores Nick Martin and Wesley Figaro, playing at #2, had to play a great final three games to take their match 9-7. On court #1, sophomore Greg Mitchell and senior Chris Pappe were serving for the match 8-7, but Wesleyan broke to make it 8-8. Then Wesleyan played a great tiebreaker, winning 7-3 to take the #1 doubles 9-8 and the Bears led 2-1. |
