(photo by Jeff Bartlett) NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/1/08)--Senior Steve Blum won both the shot put and the high jump and is second after five events in the Decathlon at the 2008 New England Division III Track and Field Championships hosted by the Coast Guard Academy.
Blum, who has won the New England Division III Decathlon championship each of the past two seasons, has 3,307 points and is 41 points behind the leader, Frank Radlof from Keene State.
Coast Guard freshman Jesse Cremeans is third with 3,143 points while senior Beau Belanger in sixth with 2,842 points.
Blum had a toss of 44 feet, 3.5 inches to win the shot put while jumping 6 feet, 2.75 inches to win the high jump. He was fourth in both the 100 meters (11.78) and the 400 meters (53.26) and he placed fifth in the long jump (18-9.75).
Cremeans won the 400 meters with a time of 51.73 to close out the first day of competition. He was also second in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 6.5 inches and he tied for second in the high jump (6-0.5). |

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/29/08)--The Coast Guard Academy men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams both won the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Awards for the 2008 season.
Coast Guard placed second at the NEWMAC Championships in men’s track and fourth in women’s track.
The Coast Guard men win the award for the second straight season while the women’s program is given the honor for the first time.
The Bears will host the New England Division III Track and Field Championships beginning on Thursday. The event runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

 Carl Luxhoj won the triple jump and placed second in the long jump to lead the Bears. NORTHAMPTON, MASS.--(4/26/08)--Carl Luxhoj won the triple jump (45-7.75) and placed second in the long jump (22-0.25) as Coast Guard placed second at the NEWMAC Championships at Smith College.
Mike Haas won the 1,500 meters (3:58.50), Kyle Coleman won the 400 meter hurdles (55.32) while the 4x400 meter relay team of Jason Erickson, Matt Romano, Coleman and Thomas Adams also won with a time of 3:20.69.
Placing second to earn All-conference honors for the Bears were Erickson in the 800 meters, Matt Eyler in the 10,000 meters, Tyler Ashner in the high jump (6-2.75), Chris Hunt in the hammer (171-11) and Steve Blum in the javelin (196-9).
Eyler also finished second in the 10,000 meters (32:54.23), setting a school record (32:54.23). The previous record was set in 1997 by Frank Pierce (32:56.86).
MIT won for the eighth straight season as the Engineers had 240 points. Coast Guard finished with 188.5 points.

 Tom Adams took home a first, second and third place finish to lead the Bears to victory yet again. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/19/08)--Coast Guard capped an unbeaten season by easily winning the Silfen Invitational at Conn. College. The Bears won every regular season meet of the 2008 season spanning both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The last time the team accomplished an undefeated campaign was 1969.
The Bears took the top four spots in the pole vault led by senior Nate Rhodes with a vault of 14-2.75. Jordan Kellam was 2nd with 13- 9, Michael Comerford 3rd with 13-9 and James Provost was 4th with a vault of 12-3.25.
Freshmen Carl Luxhoj and Matt Tolliver tied for first place in the long jump as each leaped 21-1.5. Luxhoj and Tolliver then took 1st and 2nd respectively in the triple jump as Luxhoj jumped 44-6 and Tolliver went 43-2.5”. |
