(photo by Jeff Bartlett) NEW LONDON, CONN.--(6/23/08)--Steve Blum, who graduated from the Coast Guard Academy last month, became the first ever Coast Guard Academy athlete to earn back-to-back Academic All-America honors as he was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America men's cross country/track and field College Division first team as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
He becomes just the third Coast Guard student athlete to be named a first team Academic All-American, the first since Lis Bosma (women's basketball) in 2004. Bruce Melnick (football) also earned first team honors in 1971.
Blum, who had a 3.42 GPA in Civil Engineering, was a third-team Academic All-American. He earned third team Academic All-America honors last season.
Steve became the first athlete to win three straight New England Division III Decathlon championships this Spring. He earned All-America honors last season outdoors in the javelin with a 4th place finish and this year he finished 12th in the decathlon at the Division III NCAA Championships. |

(photo by Jeff Bartlett) NEW LONDON, CONN.--(6/5/08)--Steve Blum, who graduated from the Coast Guard Academy two weeks ago, has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I men's cross country/track and field first team as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Blum, who had a 3.42 GPA in Civil Engineering, will now be placed on the national ballot with a chance to earn Academic All-America honors for the second straight season. He earned third team Academic All-America honors last season.

 Chris Hunt placed ninth in the hammer at the NCAA Division III Championships. OSH KOSH, WIS.--(5/24/08)--Senior Chris Hunt placed ninth in the hammer and classmate Steve Blum finished 12th in the decathlon at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Osh Kosh.
Hunt had a throw of 172 feet, five inches in his flight which qualified him for the finals. His best throw in the final round was 176 feet for a ninth place finish missing All-America honors by one foot.
Blum placed 12th in the decathlon with 5,995 points. Within the decathlon, he won the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, four inches while also winning the javelin with a toss of 165-10. He also placed fourth in the discus (124-5). He finished 11th of lower in the other seven events.
Blum, an All-American in the javelin with a fourth place finish and a throw of 190 feet, 10 inches, last season, had a throw of 173 feet, four inches in his flight, which did not qualify him for the finals.

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/22/08)--Coast Guard Academy’s Dan Rose has been named the 2008 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) New England Division III Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. The USTFCCCA honors the top men’s track and field performers as well as the top coaches in eight Division III regions across the country.
Coast Guard had a tremendous season as the men’s team went unbeaten in the regular season in both the indoor and outdoor season for the first time since 1969.
The Bears also had an excellent championship season, highlighted by a third-place finish at the New England Division III Championships and a second place finish at the NEWMAC championship. Senior Chris Hunt (hammer) and classmate Steve Blum (decathlon and javelin), who both graduated on Wednesday, qualified for the NCAA Championships this weekend in Wisconsin.
Rose is in his 11th season as head coach of both the men’s and women’s track programs at the Coast Guard Academy.
