Men's Outdoor Track - Bears Place 3rd at NE Championships

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/3/08)--The Coast Guard Academy men's track and field team placed third, its best finish since a second place finish in 1995, at the New England Division III Track and Field Championships held at the Coast Guard Academy.

The Bears, who were the day one leaders, had 12 athletes earn All-New England honors on the final day of competition, to give the Bears 14 total All-New England honorees.

Williams won the team championship for the fifth straight season with 151 points. MIT was second with 92 points while the Bears finished with 87 points. Springfield was fourth with 58 points.

In the final day of competition, freshman Carl Luxhoj placed second in the triple jump (46-5.5) after placing second in the long jump yesterday.

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/2/08)--Senior Chris Hunt (hammer) and freshman Carl Luxhoj (long jump) set personal bests and both placed second to earn All-New England honors, and with Steve Blum winning the decathlon, host Coast Guard leads the New England Division III Track and Field Championships after the second day of competition.

Coast Guard has 37 points while MIT is second with 24 points.

Hunt had a toss of 177 feet, three inches placing second to defending champion Noah Gauthier of Bates, who won with a throw of 183-11.

Luxhoj had a career-best leap of 22 feet, 7.75 inches and was the leader before MIT's Stephen Morton went 23-8 for the win.

The New England Division III Championships come to a close tomorrow with a full day of events scheduled.

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/2/08)--Senior Steve Blum became the first athlete to win three consecutive New England Division III Decathlon championships as he won three of the five events in day two after winning two events during the first day of the New England Division III Track and Field Championships hosted by the Coast Guard Academy.

Blum won the discus (132-01), javelin (177-05) and finished in a three-way tie for first in the pole vault with a vault of 11-3.75 feet.

Blum also won both the shot put and the high jump during the first day of the decathlon. He finished with 6,191 points while Ben Roy from WPI was second with 6,046 points.

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/1/08)--Senior Steve Blum won both the shot put and the high jump and is second after five events in the Decathlon at the 2008 New England Division III Track and Field Championships hosted by the Coast Guard Academy.

Blum, who has won the New England Division III Decathlon championship each of the past two seasons, has 3,307 points and is 41 points behind the leader, Frank Radlof from Keene State.

Coast Guard freshman Jesse Cremeans is third with 3,143 points while senior Beau Belanger in sixth with 2,842 points.

Blum had a toss of 44 feet, 3.5 inches to win the shot put while jumping 6 feet, 2.75 inches to win the high jump. He was fourth in both the 100 meters (11.78) and the 400 meters (53.26) and he placed fifth in the long jump (18-9.75).

Cremeans won the 400 meters with a time of 51.73 to close out the first day of competition. He was also second in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 6.5 inches and he tied for second in the high jump (6-0.5).
