Softball - Bears Are #2 Seed in Providence Regional

All-Americans Hayley Feindel and Amanda Frederick lead the Bears back to the NCAA tournament for the third straight season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/9/11)--Coast Guard, the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and tournament champions, are the second-seed in the Providence Regional and will take on seventh-seeded Lesley, the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) tournament champion, on Thursday at 4:00 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship at Rhode Island College.

The Bears (36-2), who won the NEWMAC regular season and tournament championship for the second straight season are making their third straight NCAA tournament appearance and third overall. Coast Guard had advanced to the regional championship game in each of the last two seasons.

Lesley (29-6) is riding a 19-game winning streak. The Lynx last loss and only losses up north this season were to Wellesley on April 10th when the Blue won 6-2 and 8-7. The Lynx are making their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2008.

Eastern Connecticut, the Little East regular season and tournament champion is the top-seed, Endicott is the third seed while Rhode Island College (4th), Worcester State (5th), St. Joseph (Maine) (6th) and Husson (8th) round out the eight-team regional.

Softball - Feindel Sets NCAA Record With 26th Shutout

Hayley Feindel set the NCAA single-season record with her 26th shutout and broke her own school-record with her 35th win of the season.
MIDDLETOWN, CONN.--(4/27/11)--Junior All-American Hayley Feindel broke the NCAA Division III single-season record by throwing her 26th shutout of the season, a four-hitter, leading Coast Guard, ranked fourth nationally, to a 3-0 win over Wesleyan in a non-conference game, the regular season finale for the Bears.

Feindel, who was named the NEWMAC Pitcher of the Year for the third straight season earlier on Wednesday, has not allowed an earned run in 105 innings. She also broke her own single-season school record as she registered her 35th win of the season to improve to 35-2 on the year. She allowed just four singles, walked a batter and struck out nine. She leads the nation with wins (35), shutouts (26) and strikeouts (411). Feindel is closing in on the all-time Division III strikeout record of 1,165 held by Jennifer Martinez of St. Joseph (L.I.) which she did from 2006-2008. Feindel is just five shy of the record with 1,160 career strikeouts.

Softball - Bears Win Major NEWMAC Awards Again

Amanda Frederick was named the NEWMAC Player of the Year for the second straight season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/27/11)--Senior All-American catcher Amanda Frederick was named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year, junior All-American Hayley Feindel was chosen unanimous selection as Pitcher of the Year and Donna Koczajowski was named the Coach of the Year as Coast Guard swept the three awards for the second straight season and also placed four players on the All-conference team in voting by the league’s nine head coaches.

Frederick, a third-team All-American last season, becomes just the third player in NEWMAC history to repeat as Player of the Year. She leads the team with a .387 average, six homers, ten doubles, 33 runs scored, a .658 slugging percentage and a .460 on base percentage. Frederick, who is second on the team with 30 RBI’s, has not made an error all season in 414 chances.

Donna Koczajowski, the NEWMAC Coach of the Year for the second straight season, got caught with the water bucket after winning a second straight NEWMAC tournament.
She earned first team All-conference honors for the fourth straight season. Frederick, the 2008 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, has rewritten the Coast Guard Academy record book. She is the Bears’ all-time leader in games played (163), hits (219), doubles (51), runs scored (146) and RBI’s (168) and she is second in school-history with 26 home runs.
