Softball - Third-Seeded Bears Open NCAA Play On Thursday

Hayley Feindel and the Bears will take on Salem State on Thursday at 2 p.m.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/10/10)--Coast Guard, the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and tournament champions, are the #3 seed in the Wellesley Regional and will take on sixth-seeded Salem State, the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) tournament champion, on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship at Wellesley College. Salem State (33-8-1) won its first MASCAC tournament championship after tying for the regular season championship and settling for the second-seeded in the conference tournament.

The Bears made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season as an at-large selection, also earning a three-seed, and advanced all the way to the New England region championship game and won a school-record 39 games.

Eastern Connecticut (32-4-1), the Little East regular season and tournament champion is the top-seed, Brandeis (27-7-1), who received an at-large bid is the second seed. Bowdoin (4th), Rivier (5th), Endicott (7th) and Husson (8th) round out the eight-team regional.

Softball - Bears Sweep Major NEWMAC Awards

Donna Koczajowski earned NEWMAC Coach of the Year honors for the first time.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/4/10)--Coast Guard sophomore pitcher Hayley Feindel, junior catcher Amanda Frederick and head coach Donna Koczajowski were named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Pitcher, Player and Coach of the Year respectively as the Bears placed four players on the All-conference team in voting by the leagues nine head coaches.

The Bears, who are 30-8 on the season, won their second straight NEWMAC regular season championship before earning the programs first automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by winning its first NEWMAC tournament championship.

Feindel (28-8), who leads the NEWMAC with 28 wins, a 0.96 ERA and leads the nation with 331 strikeouts and 13 shutouts, earns Pitcher of the Year honors and first team All-conference honors for the second straight season.

Softball - Feindel, Frederick Earn NEWMAC Weekly Honors

Hayley Feindel won NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the fourth time this season as she threw three shutouts and a pair of no-hitters in the tournament.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/3/10)--Sophomore pitcher Hayley Feindel and junior catcher Amanda Frederick were named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Pitcher and Player of the Week after leading Coast Guard to its first NEWMAC tournament championship last week.

The Bear battery mates both earn the honors for the second straight week. Feindel wins the honor for the fourth time this season while Frederick takes home Player of the Week honors for the third time this season.

Feindel threw three shutouts including a pair of no-hitters and a one-hitter in the tournament. She was 4-1 with a 1.06 ERA in the five games. She threw 33 innings and allowed 14 hits, five runs, all earned while walking 10 and striking out 41. She held opponents to a .125 batting average.

She opened the tournament with a five inning no-hitter while striking out nine in a 8-0 win over Wellesley. She also fired a no-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Babson. In the first championship game, she allowed just one hit in a 1-0 win over Springfield to force the second championship game.

Softball - BEARS WIN 1ST NEWMAC CHAMPIONSHIP

Amanda Frederick and the Bears celebrated their first NEWMAC tournament championship.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/29/10)--Freshman Megan Cook had a two-run single in the second inning and that was all sophomore Hayley Feindel would need as top-seeded Coast Guard captured its first ever New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball tournament championship with a 3-1 win over second-seeded Springfield.

Coast Guard, which won its second straight NEWMAC regular season title this season, won its third game in two days including a pair of wins over the two-time defending NEWMAC tournament champion Pride to win the championship and get the program’s first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Bears, who came out of the losers bracket, beat Springfield 1-0 in the first championship game yesterday to force the second game this afternoon.

The selections and sites for the NCAA Division III tournament will be announced on Monday, May 10th.
