Sam Ingham and Amanda Hamlet won A-Division at the Atlantic Coast Tournament by 11 points. St. Petersburg, FL--(11/14/10)--The No. 11 Lady Bears once again bested their national ranking this past weekend by finishing 9th at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship, hosted by Eckerd College and the University of South Florida. The Coast Guard women's team had only qualified for this championship once in the previous 10 seasons, with a 9th place finish being the best result in at least the past 15 seasons. This wraps up an extremely successful season for the Lady Bears, with several top five finishes at major events, which will set them up for a run at the National Championship next spring.
Light, inconsistent breeze was the norm throughout the two days as the westerly sea breeze battled with the easterly frontal breeze. On Saturday morning, three light air races were sailed in a dying easterly. After a long wait for the sea breeze, the race committee got in six more races before the sun set. Coast Guard sailed very well on day one, with several top-10 finishes, and ended the day in sixth place. A much steadier easterly greeted the sailors on Sunday morning, in which the Lady Bears started charging early, climbing the leader board. However, the team didn’t fare as well in the light shifty breeze in the afternoon and struggled to stay in the front of most races as they had been all weekend. |

Krysta Rohde sailed to a strong 5th place at the 2010 ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship. St. Petersburg, FL--(11/7/10)--Senior Krysta Rohde finished fifth at the 2010 ICSA Women’s Singlehanded National Championship, hosted by the University of Southern Florida. This year marked Rohde’s third appearance at the championship that she won her freshman year and finished 2nd her sophomore year. With most of the country’s top singlehanded sailors all being in college at the same time - more so than in recent memory - the talent level and competition at this year’s championship was exceptionally high.
The sailors were greeted with cold temps and strong wind on the first day of the event, which would continue to be the pattern for the next three days. Wind averaging above 15 knots and gusting past 25 knots made for challenging racing and a lot of ‘on the edge of your seat’ moments. For the sailors at the top of the fleet, the name of the game was hiking hard and limiting your mistakes.
Rohde finished in the top-8 in 15 of the 18 races, with several top-3 finishes and a race win in race ten. She finished in 5th place with 97 points in the last singlehanded event of her college career, solidifying a record that few have been able to accomplish. |
